Bubur Ayam Osin: Eating out in Bandung

Mom and I went to Bandung, her hometown, to visit my grandma.  Grandma is in good health, thankfully, but she's a very picky eater and needs somebody to cheer her on.   We know that the one thing that will cheer her on is to have one of her grandchild accompany her.  She loves feeding her grandkids, which I think is what grandmas do...

As soon as I walked in the house, she swiftly grabbed the mangoes that she just got from the market.   Who else peels their mangoes like this (that takes some skills!!) ?????    My grandma does :):)
And that's one whole piece, BTW, not 5 different peels that we styled for the picture.

After a nice, firm, juicy mangoes, we took her out to "bubur belakang pasar" (directly translated to "the congee place behind the market").  LOL.  Their actual resto name is Osin, but they're famously known as bubur belakang pasar.  Also...I wouldn't call them a resto, it's more like a hut, just like Mr. Doebil's suckling pig in Bali.

My mom's family has been going to Osin ever since they're little, and I know that those from Bandung are familiar with this place.   They're open in the wee hours of the morning.  Please note that some (if not most) of their menu items may contain pork.

We ordered the congee, the shrimp dumpling soup, cakwe (chinese doughnut), and bapia (fried pork pancake).  And the highlight of this lunch is the fried pancake, which they're famous for!!  Delish!  The congee was also delicious.  It wasn't watery, and flavourful.  The congee comes with minced chicken, sliced cakwe, and chopped scallions.

Of course, their prices are super reasonable.  The congee was about CAD$1.50, the cakwe was $0.50, and the bapia was $1.00.   Sigh.  I wish Vancouver's price is even close to that.

My mom said that they are also famous for their bubur kacang (chinese white bean soup).  But none of us are big fans of bubur kacang, so we didn't order it.  Maybe next time :)

Anyway, as I noted, I wouldn't consider this an actual restaurant due to its open concept (sounds fancy).  They basically cook everything right there, especially the fried items.  And yes, they fried items are displayed right in the open.  So for those with the a faint heart and weak stomach (ie. those who are used to a cleaner environment), please eat at your own discretion, okay?  I myself took Norit before and after, as usual..  and I was able to enjoy the food without any stomach issues!  Yay!

This is the front of the resto, where all the actions happen.  It's an open concept, there's no door.  And on the background, you can see my grandma's car....so yes.  yum in the tum tum.  all those oil, and the extra car exhaust.  But that's why we are so resilient to stomach bugs, man!!
