Tonkatsu Maisen Aoyama Honten (Omotesando)
When we were in Tokyo, another food item that we wanted to try was Tonkatsu. And for that, we picked Maisen, located in Omotesando. They've been around since 1965 and have been famous for their tonkatsu ever since. This restaurant is highly rated and a lot of people nominated this restaurant as one of the best traditional Tonkatsu in Tokyo.
Aside from the main restaurant, turns out this location has a outdoor food stall-type establishment; which is great for people who are on-the-go and just want to grab something quick to eat. Because this was our first time eating there, we decided to go into the restaurant and order from the sit-in menu.
We ordered the more expensive one on the menu, thinking that we're already here and might as well go all out (but still within our budget. haha). The restaurant itself is quiet large, I have read reviews where other people have to wait for a while before they can get a table. We went on a week day, right before lunch time, and there was no line up!
We got the Kurobuta Cutlet Bowl and the Kurobota Pork Loin Cutlet set. We initially wanted to get their special set, the Amai Yuwaku (aged pork cutlet set), but turns out they only have it on a weekend! Boo!
That was a blessing in disguise for us, perhaps, since the Amai Yuwaku set would have done a 5,000 Yen damaged, whereas the Kurobuta cutlet set was half the price. Haha. I still would have loved to try that special set, though. I have no idea what an aged pork cutlet taste like.
If you're like my husband, who likes donburi, the Cutlet Bowl was yummy! the pork loin was definitely the star of the meal. This was a fairly-priced meal, I believe it was around 1,500 Yen. As always, you can get more cabbage as you'd like.
I personally prefer the cutlet set because I feel like I could taste the pork cutlet on its own, without having other flavours (the eggs, the sauce, etc) interfering with my eating experience. They provide their home made sauce, which is a great compliment to the meal. As you can see, the cutlet was perfectly fried, crispy, yet juicy on the inside. Yum in the tum tum!
If I ever make it back to this restaurant in the future, I will definitely get the Amai Yuwaku set, just to try what an aged loin cutlet taste like! The next time we come back, we would also like to try some of the sandwiches that's sold outside at the kiosk.
