Review: Taiwanese style buffet 食工坊自助美食

Day 2 continues!

After our delicious breakfast at the Gaoxiong Doujiang Breakfast Resto, we continued our walk around the neighbourhood.   We surprisingly enjoyed taking a stroll around Kaohsiung.  There are sidewalks at most streets (yes, there were a few streets that didn't have a sidewalk so we walked on the street), and the sidewalks were nice and clean.  Interestingly, the side walks are usually managed by the owner of the building instead of by the city, so the sidewalks are different between neighbouring stores.  Some decided to put ceramic floors on the sidewalk to make it prettier, some decided to add a steeper slope to their unit, some decided to leave it bare concrete.  As such... you have to really pay attention to where you're stepping otherwise you could easily trip or sprain your ankle because of the uneven pavement!  Having said that, the owner of each business unit really take great care of their sidewalk!   So it's always very clean.

Because we were there in December, the weather wasn't that bad.  Of course it was still humid and warm, but it wasn't overly hot and it was definitely bearable to be out and about.   (I was still sweating profusely though....).

As we were walking around the neighbourhood, we stumbled upon this corner restaurant, 食工坊自助美食, serving a Taiwanese style buffet (? is that what it's called??).  Sorry since I don't know how to read the Chinese characters, here's a Google street view of what the resto looks like! (the green one on the corner, of course).

We've never tried eating at one of these buffet style place so we have no idea what to do.  The lady that's serving us didn't speak English but she tried to explain it to us using body language, and it worked!  Basically we pick whatever food we want, however much we want.  We were provided with a clean stainless steel thong that we used to grab the food, and then she would weigh the food.  Afterwards she then give us rice.

As you can see from the picture, it's another "open concept" establishment ;)

When we got there, the choices weren't complete yet because she wasn't finished cooking.  It looks like she just opened.  We were probably there around 10:45am.

There were sooo many different food!!! We literally wanted to try every single one of them.   She even had deep fried fish that looked so good!

There were a couple of seating area at the restaurant.  And as always, it's so nice and clean even though it's open concept!

We ordered a few items; sweet sour pork, red fermented pork, veggies, sesame chicken, five spice chicken, and a couple other that I couldn't remember.  We didn't take a picture because the plate didn't look beautiful because it's just a bunch of different dishes piled on top of one another.  LOL.  The damage was $2.50CAD.

You have no idea how happy I was to find the red fermented pork dish!!  It's one of my favourite Taiwanese dishes and I always order this item whenever possible (Pearl Castle has one of the best ones in Vancouver IMO).  I was elated to be able to try it in Taiwan!

We looked up the review of this restaurant afterwards.  It's not a highly rated restaurant but for us the food was great and it was such a great experience!
