Review: 前金肉燥飯 braised pork belly rice (Kaohsiung, TW)
We're on to Day 4!
The meatballs in soup and the braised meatball was alright. I prefer the one in soup because I like soups. I find it a lot easier and faster to eat something with soup because everything just kinds of slides down your throat. LOL. Anyway, the braised meatball was good, but it was overshadowed by the braised pork. If I ever have the opportunity to eat this again, I won't order the braised meatball and opt for something else. They have braised egg too, which we didn't get because my SO doesn't like overdone yolk.
We started the day with a traditional Taiwanese breakfast: rice with minced pork (belly). LOL. I have to specify that this is pork belly, so there are chunks fat in the dish; don't be surprised. We again leaned on father Google to take us to one of the higher rated braised pork belly rice,
前金肉燥飯, 801, Taiwan, Kaohsiung City, Qianjin District, 大同二路26號
We came upon this place, which is about a 15 minute walk away from our Airbnb (need I say again how much I love the strategic location of our Airbnb??). I'm familiar with this dish because my family in Indonesia would cook this ever now and then. The pork belly is braised in soy sauce and some wine; the sauce is very tasty!
We ordered the braised pork (which comes with pork floss), meatballs in soup, braised meatball, and over-easy egg. This was a good portion for us because.... this is part 1 of 2 breakfast for that day. HAHAHA.
The braised pork was delicious! It was (of course) fatty but once I've gotten over the fact that it would add 2 inches to my waist and came to term with it, the flavour just bursted in my mouth! The sauce was flavourful and the spoonful of rice balanced it all out.
I've never eaten this dish with eggs before, so this was a new experience. But... why did my family never thought of that??? Having the runny yolk over the rich, fatty pork chunks was arguably the best combo ever.
This was also a very cheap meal; super worth it. And as mentioned, it was a good hearty portion for a meal. Because of the fatty nature of the pork belly, though, I was craving a hot drink to try to wash all the fat away in my mouth. But unfortunately they only had cold drinks, and we only had cold drinks in our water bottle. I was out of luck; having a hot cup of tea would have been the perfect ending. It was still good regardless!
And off we went to the new restaurant for our 2nd breakfast! :)
