Lunch at Kingyo

I have heard really great things about the lunch menu at Kingyo during weekdays, specifically their deluxe bento box.  And of course, since I don't work in downtown, it's almost impossible to go to Kingyo during lunch.  Well, somehow I managed to take a day off from work (!!), and off we went.

The one item that I absolutely wanted to try was the Kingyo's Deluxe Bento Box.  They only have 10 sets per day, so we actually arrive 15 minutes before they opened and lined up by the door.  There was already a few people ahead of us.  So we sat down, and placed our order right away.  Oh, and can't forget the home made ginger ale!

As expected, the Deluxe Bento Box was amazing!  There was only one item that I did not care for, and I think it was the octopus (I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't look for it).

We also ordered the Tonkatsu Combo (pork cutlet).  I think the tonkatsu is one of the best that I've tried.  It's tender but still has a bite, although it was a bit on the fatty side, which is probably why it was nice and tender.  It also comes with a bowl of toasted sesame seeds that you have to grind yourself and make your own sesame-tonkatsu sauce.  The toasted sesame seeds came in a suribachi (it's like a grinding bowl), and once the seeds have been grounded to your liking, you can mix it together with the Tonkatsu sauce (I find it easier to pour the sauce into the surbachi and mix it in there).  Or, if you don't like sesame, you can certainly exclude it from your feast!

If you ever go to Kingyo, do try our other favourites:  Beef Tongue (I have only ordered this during dinner), Agedashi tofu (also during dinner), pork kakuni bowl (available during lunch...not for the faint-hearted, because it is very fatty), chicken kara-age bowl (available during lunch).
