Pajo's fish and chips @ Steveston
It's been a while since I typed up a post about food, and this one has been in my computer for several months now. Fluffy pillow vs. laptop? Sorry laptop, Fluffy Pillow will always win. He he he.
Anyway. Several months ago, when the bf's parents were still here, we went to eat fish & chips at Pajo's. We've heard lot of good things about Pajo's, however because it's in Steveston, which is a bit far from where we live, we just never had a chance to swing by. Just to clarify, Steveston (located in Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver) is about 30 minutes away from where we live, which, for my liking, is FAR. Hahaha. I live in Vancouver and most of the time we would opt to go eat somewhere in the Vancouver area. It'd be even better if we can walk to our destination.
But, his parents love fish and chips, and we thought we should take them to Steveston Village, which is actually beautiful.
It's not your typical fish & chips restaurant, no indoor dining, no nice tables and chairs. It's more like an outlet. There are plenty of benches by the water, or you can also sit on the ledges by the grass area. If you were here in the cooler season, make sure to wear jacket....something that I did not do during this particular visit and I ended up freezing my butt off.
After trying a couple of bites, I have to say that this has become my new favourites! We have been going to Mr. Pickwick's all these times (because there are a couple of Mr. Pickwick's within Vancouver). Pajo's has a lighter batter which makes a huge difference when you're trying to finish several pieces of fish. The lighter the batter, the more fish I can eat. HAHAHA. I also love the fries.
The only drawback that I have is the fact that if it's the beginning of summer, it's kind of chilly to eat by the water. It'd be ideal if you can get a table, but during lunch hour, there are LOTS of people there. OH, and they're served in a paper cone (which, as you can see on my picture, we disassembled and used as the plate) . It does get very windy, so you have to make sure the paper doesn't get blown by the wind, otherwise your food will topple over. The tables are NOT clean. Because it's by the water, there are seagulls and other birds flying around. So... no, if your food fell on the table top, do NOT eat it. You don't want to eat fish and chips laced with seagull's poop.
Here are some of my tips:
- There are 2 different Pajo's outlets in Steveston. We usually go to Pajo's on Garry Point Park (tons of free parking, less busy than the one on the Wharf). If you do go to the one on the Wharf, I would suggest going a bit earlier so that you can find free parking.
- Bring some wet wipes. They come in handy, especially if you're going to start grabbing them fries using your fingers and shoving 2 or more at a time into your mouth...which is what I usually do
- Bring a jacket if the weather is still a bit cooler. Keep in mind that this is right by the water, so it will always be cooler, and there are lots of breeze.
- Bring your own water or soda from home. I always keep bottled water in the car, and that's what we usually drink when we go to Pajo's. I hate buying $2.50 bottled water. Oh, and don't forget to recycle.
- Don't over-eat. There's an ice cream outlet right beside Pajo's on Garry Point. HAHAHAHA. I think it's called Timothy's. They have frozen yogurt and also have ice cream. Try the espresso flavour, or the hedgehog flavour. I've also tried the frozen yogurt (fresh fruits), and they are yummy! If you're ordering the ice cream, try the home-made waffle cone. Shat...my mouth is watering as I'm typing this.
- Once you're full, you can now take a walk to help settle the food in the your stomach, and walk towards the Wharf.
:)
