Snacks to try at the Richmond Night Market
If you haven't been to the Richmond Night Market, please do! It's quiet a treat, but make sure that you eat dinner first since the food are pretty price-y. Roughly, if you didn't eat beforehand and you're a guy, you would probably have to spend $20+ until you're full and satisfied...that's just a rough estimate though, but believe me it does get expensive pretty quickly. A small portion of Taiwanese chicken nuggets cost you around $4. Four pieces of shumai cost you (I think) $3.50. So yeah..you do the math.
Here is a list of things that you should try while you're there.
1. the infamous Hurricane potatoes.
From what I heard through the grapevines, it is the "in" thing in Asia. Heck, it looks like it is THE thing at night market, since they have 3 different stands selling hurricane potatoes. It is basically potato wedges (but they have a machine that cuts the potatoes into such shape, as depicted in the picture) that you can dip in whatever sauce/powdered flavour you choose; I usually go for the white cheddar powder...nyummy!!).
I would suggest going to one of the two busy stands on the busy aisle (if you read my previous post, you'll know why). You should look for this kind-looking Asian guy in apron demonstrating how to twirl the potatoes, and get in line right away! If I remember correctly, it cost $3 each, but you can buy 2 for $5.
2. mango dessert!!
Yes oh yes oh yes...it's super delicious! Nyam-nyam-nyam! If you've ever been to Crystal Mall, well, these are the same guys. Tee hee hee. The mango pieces with ice cream is awesome (picture below), I usually add rice balls to it -at an extra cost- because I like a little bit of bite in my snacks.
Another things you must try is the mango-tapioca dessert (not pictures, sorry...we don't remember about cameras when we have this dessert in front of our eyes). *drool*.
Basically, it's small pearl tapioca (the small, translucent ones like you can see in this website) plus lots of fresh mango pieces plus coconut milk plus crushed ice. OMG, that's goodness, right there!!
3. Vietnamese dessert
This stand is quiet popular, there's always a line up. The owner of this stand, a Vietnamese lady has been featured previously in a newspaper article for her excellent dessert that she sells at the Richmond Night Market. In my opinion, that article was not exaggerated by one bit! Aside from the fact that her dessert reminds me of Indonesian dessert (chendol?? es merah delima??). Even though she has a set-menu, you can actually ask her to only put what you want in the cup. We usually ask for the chendol, water chestnuts (a.k.a. merah delima), and the colourful jelly. She then adds coconut milk, and some crushed ice on top. Hell yeahhhh.
(of course...not pictured...sorry, same reason as before: once we have this dessert on our hands, we forget about everything else).
If you like beans, she also has that in the menu (a three-bean-dessert...or something like that). Unfortunately I don't like beans, so I've never tried that one.
4. Egg balls
If you're a fan of eggballs, it's worth trying, especially the flavoured ones. Beware of the line up though, if you don't come early, you'd end up waiting for 30+ minutes before you can enjoy your egg balls. My favourite is still the one at Aberdeen mall...nothing has conquered it, yet.
Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. I'll post more if I remember more :)
There are other not-as-exciting stuff, such as churros (why buy churros at a night market?), cotton candy (my eye wanders towards the colourful candy everytime we walk by the stand...but i know for sure I'll eat a bite, and that's it), corn on the cob (I can make this at home), deepfried cheesecake (hmm..maybe next time, if and when I weigh 100 lbs), overpriced freshly squeezed lemonade (for $4? no thanks, I'd rather get a bubble tea at Dragon Ball)......really? You can buy cotton candy at Playland, or even English Bay.
(In my opinion) if you go to Night Market to discover the authentic and unique Asian street food, then you should do exactly that! If you don't like the Asian snacks, then please help yourself with the other stuff. But at least try :)
You never know what you've been missing out until you try!
